LOVE Korea is ‘Korea UNESCO ESD Official Project’.
In 2002 the United Nations (UN) proclaimed the years 2005 to 2014 the World Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in Korea is being implemented under the patronage of the Korea UNESCO. LOVE Korea is leading an innovative practice for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a program creating opportunities for exchange between international volunteers, local communities and people in Korea.
The main purpose of LOVE Korea program is to exchange cultural diversity and to influence the host organization and local community through volunteering activities by actively fulfilling the missions of each project for the Education for Sustainable Development
Through the project we hope
For local people to:
– Take an opportunity to meet and experience multi-cultures with international volunteers
– Obtain help and solidarity on their social issues from volunteers
– Gain new idea & energy from young international volunteers to develop local community
For volunteers to:
– Understand and experience real “Korean culture & life”
– Learn to respect the different cultures among volunteers and locals
– Become responsible for the environment, youth and society
There have been about 441 international volunteers who have participated in LOVE Korea program from 39 countries all over the world since 2003. This LOVE Korea program is getting popular as years go by due to highly evaluated by the previous volunteers and increased attention to Korea itself.
LOVE Korea is a program to generate great synergy between volunteer and local community in Korea by doing various activities related social development that improves life in and around of each projects and education that improves English skills and intercultural understanding of local children and local people.
They are distinguished from three different types of project sites which are community, alternative school and local children center. Each project has its own theme, purpose and characteristics. Volunteers can experience and learn its own value and local Korean cultures. Volunteers will contribute in many different facts such as social, environmental, agricultural and kid & youth educational development projects in and around the project site.
Through LOVE Korea program volunteers will make a difference by taking part in our program for 3 months. Volunteers can make a valuable contribution for youth and local communities that local children improved their English skills and promoted global mind through inter-cultural learning from and various experiences with foreign volunteers. In the meantime, LOVE Korea program is a great opportunity for volunteers to understand Korea and Korean culture and immerse themselves in the local culture.
We would like to invite active volunteers to take part in LOVE Korea program on 2016 organized for 46 volunteers, 16 projects in 8 local communities. We are looking forward to meeting motivated and active volunteers from all over the world for the year of 2016!
Our activities
Our International Volunteer Projects offer young people the opportunity to join international voluntary service on community-based projects in over 70 countries worldwide. The projects differ enormously ranging from nature conservation, restoration, education and construction to projects that are more socially based including work with adults and children with special needs, teaching or organizing youth/children’s holiday schemes.

Basic information
The volunteer can chose the project he/she would like to be in and those who are accepted for the project work with other multicultural volunteers as partners who are interested in the project as like you from all over the world. 2 or 3 volunteers become a team to work in the project for 3 months. We have 9 projects working together with Korean volunteers in 2016. International volunteers will mainly work with the host of the project for assisting them and teach the youth and children of local community. Volunteers should be prepared to be flexible with regard to their project placement. We hope that volunteers contribute their passion and efforts to each project all across the country in Korea for 2016.
■ Eligibility
– Volunteers must be between 19 to 35 years old.
– All volunteers are required to speak English well enough to communicate and carry out the project
activities.
– Volunteers are also encouraged to learn Korean. It will help you to communicate with local people and
children in the project.
– Every volunteer should be motivated to complete their assigned projects successfully and are willing to
learn about Korea and local cultures.
– Be open minded and enthusiastic
■ Training: On-arrival training, Mid-term evaluation, Final evaluation
– Upon arrival in Korea, there is a mandatory orientation for 2 nights and 3 days before moving to the project
site. On-arrival training contains LOVE Korea program introduction, conflict management case study, team building, experience Korean culture, regulation and etc.Through this on-arrival training, we will have the chance to become as long-term volunteers and encourage to remain active during whole period of project and will gain the confidence to explore the local area by themselves.
– During the project, there will be a mid-term evaluation for 2 days in order to share their own experience, episodes, and skills with the volunteers and recharge.
– After the project, there will be a final evaluation aiming at final reflection of the program and getting some feedback for the next volunteers.
■ Accommodation & Food
– Meals and accommodation will be provided during the project period by host organization. However, depending on the project, volunteers may be also required to cook for themselves.
■ Work & Free Time
– Work hours and schedules vary from project to project, but in general working hour is around 5 to 7 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Additionally, you may be asked to join certain activities on weekend if necessary.
– Volunteers are responsible for organizing their own free time after their daily work and for the weekend. If needed, host organizations will help volunteers to findnecessary information on travel.
■ Insurance
– We provide insurance for accidents only during the project. It covers only 40% of the actual cost according to the insurance regulations for foreigners in Korea. Therefore, volunteers MUST bring their own health and travel insurance and be aware of compensation process, if applicable.
■ Duration & Number of Volunteers
– About 3 months
– 2 or 3 international & Korean volunteers in each project
■ Participation Fee: 200 Euro for a project (Pay upon arrival)

■ Others
1) Arrival
– There is no airport pick up service by host organization, so volunteers need to travel to the orientation place according to the info-sheet which is presented to them. Public transportation in Korea is very convenient to navigate, so do NOT worry.
2) Transportation
– Volunteers will move to the project site with 1 or 2 fellow volunteers after arrival orientation.
– Volunteers are responsible for all personal travel costs from/to orientation and project site.
3) CERTIFICATE OF GOOD CONDUCT (CGC)
-All volunteers are required to submit CGC.

Project: Historically, and even now, human beings have been searching for the true definition of a peaceful, harmonious, and “happy life”. In pursuit of the answer to this question, a group of people gathered in 1984 in what is now Sanan Village, an idealistic community which follows the philosophy of an environment-friendly, non-possessive society. As of today, around 20 people reside within this communal village, and the residents are encouraged to pay more attention to the preservation and conservation of the environment while also freely sharing public resources. People in the village live together, work together and share together. The volunteer also need to follow their life style. Main income of the village is chicken farming. Those who are interested in a new and alternative way of living which is very different from a “normal and capitalized” life in Korea, may obtain some fresh ideas about their life through this program.
Work
– Poultry farming for example, feeding chickens, collecting eggs every morning, working in the egg-selection-facility.
– Sometimes required to help farming and housework
Extra activities: You may take some chances to participate in weekend workcamp
Qualifications of Volunteers

Food: Provided meal twice a day (Basically villagers don’t eat the breakfast, in case of volunteers, available for self-catering)
Working Hours: Monday to Sunday (One day off during the weekday)
Free time: One day during the weekdays, one week off in the middle of the project

Project: Alternative school is an educational establishment with a curriculum and methods that are nontraditional. These schools have a special curriculum offering a more flexible program of study than a formal school. A wide range of philosophies and teaching methods are offered by alternative schools; some have strong political, scholarly, or philosophical orientations, and dissatisfied with some aspects of mainstream or formal education.
Green Dream is especially focusing on eco-farming education, independency, peace and community- based education. Therefore, school expects international volunteers who can bring creative teaching method not formal, deliver the information of various countries, cultures and languages and build a friendship with students. It will be very unique experiences to volunteers who are interested in sharing with your personal background/knowledge and learning unique education system.
Work
– Teaching English to students
– Participating classes with students: Pottery class, arts etc.
– Joining outdoor activities with students: hiking and field trip
– Teaching English in local children center near the school once a week
Teaching Information:
– Age & Number of students: 17 to 19 years old & 10 to20 students at a school
– Number of teachers: 1 English teacher (A main communicator with foreign volunteers)
Extra activities: The school may invite you to join them on field trips, such as hiking, cycling
Qualifications of Volunteers:
1) Essential qualification
– Those who have teaching experience or are interested in teaching. (Especially with non-formal methods)
– Those who are interested in teenagers and socialized with them.
2) Preferred qualification
– Apart from school schedule, you need to be independent to manage your own free time.
Documents to be submitted: VEF
Location: Muju, Jeollabuk-do province. Taking 3 hours from Seoul by express bus. Muju area is surrounded by mountain and easily access to tourism cities and large major cities including Seoul.
Terminal: Muju Anseong Bus Terminal
Accommodation: A Shared room with other volunteers or students in school dormitory
Food: Provided meal in school cafeteria
Working Hours: Monday to Friday (5-7 hours)
Free time: Weekends and national holidays
(All people including volunteers have to leave the school on weekend per every two weeks)
Participation fee: €200 for a project

Project: Local Children Center in Korea is the facility for the children welfare services. The center provides children a shelter after the regular school and educational/cultural opportunities as well. Most of children in rural area have fewer opportunities to meet foreigners and get a high quality English education compared to the urban area. Also although international marriage is quite common phenomenon in rural area, local residents are lack of understanding of multi-culture. So the children are facing discrimination in the school, cultural and linguistic difficulties. International volunteers can give them chances to interact with foreigners and to understand multi-culture. And English can be a tool to understand Korean local children and interact with them. Big Tree Local Children Center welcomes you to check your own class with your talents and ideas.
Work:
– Teaching English to primary school students and middle school students
– Helping farming
– Taking care of children while they are in the center
Teaching Information:
– Age & Number of students: 8 to 16 years old & 10 to30 children at an LCC
– Number of Teachers: 1 to 3 teachers
Extra activities: The center may invite you to join with them on field trips on Saturday
Qualifications of Volunteers:
1) Essential qualification
– Those who have teaching experience or are interested in teaching.(Especially with non-formal methods)
– Those who are interested in kids and socialized with them.
2) Preferred qualification – Interest in outdoor activities and farming
Documents to be submitted: VEF
Location: Yeongwol, Gangwon province. Taking 5 hours from Seoul by bus. The center is quite distance from the downtown however, volunteers can use the shuttle bus from center to downtown or bicycle.
Many tourists visit Yeongwol to enjoy the nature and activities in there.
Terminal: Jecheon Bus Terminal
Accommodation: A shared room with other volunteers in Local Children Center
Food: Provided ingredient for breakfast and lunch, and meal for dinner
Free time: Weekends and national holidays

Project: Seodong Artistic Creation Space is in the Seodong local market where is the place aiming at energizing local traditional market. Seodong has historical significance itself. After breaking the Korean-war, many refugees moved to the Busan where is located in Southern part of Korea. Especially, Korean government forced the refugees move to the Seodong area, and it remains still very congested one.
Seodong Artistic Creation Space wanted to vitaminize to this unstructured village and local-friendly art space with various programs including global citizenship education and related to various cultural activities to the local children and residents. Although Busan is the second biggest city in Korea, compared to the capital city, opportunities to take a chance to get global citizenship education and cultural experience program are still not common. Through those programs and events from volunteers, residents in Seodong village will get closer with global education.
Work:
– Operating global citizenship education to local children and resident
– Proceeding cultural exchange program with local people
– Supporting events such as International Day of Peace, Earth hour and UNICEF Village
– Preparing and participating for exhibition and artistic programs at the centre
Extra activities: The center may ask you to participate in extra activities in addition to above work.
Qualifications of Volunteers:
1) Essential qualification
– Those who have teaching experience or are interested in teaching.(Especially with non-formal methods)
– Those who can communicate in English
– Those who are interested in local community and socialized with local people.
2) Preferred qualification
– Interest in interacting with residents and local children

Location: Busan, Gyeongsangnamdo province. Taking 4 hours from Seoul by train.
Busan is the second biggest city in Korea and it has a beautiful beach and sightseeing spots.
Terminal: Busan Bus Terminal (Nopodong)
Accommodation: A shared room with other volunteers at the Center
Food: Provided budget for meals by the host
Free time: Sunday and Monday, National holidays

Project: Local Children Center in Korea is the facility for the children welfare services. The center provides children a shelter after the regular school and educational/cultural opportunities as well. Most of children in rural area have fewer opportunities to meet foreigners and get a high quality English education compared to the urban area. Also although international marriage is quite common phenomenon in rural area, local residents are lack of understanding of multi-culture. So the children are facing discrimination in the school, cultural and linguistic difficulties. International volunteers can give them chances to interact with foreigners and to understand multi-culture. And English can be a tool to understand Korean local children and interact with them. Especially in Sunshine Local Children center, there are many children who need affection caused by the absence of parent and family matters.
