WHV – The Feast of Na-Tcha in
the Historic Centre of Macau
Let’s learn the knowledge of World Heritage as well as the history of the heritage in Macau. Participants will act as an ambassador to introduce world heritage in spot of Macau to the residents and tourists and promote Macau as a UNESCO World Heritage city.
The Feast of Na-Tcha and its Parade is one of the most attractive local cultural events. This workcamp is organized by Macao New Chinese Youth Association (MNCYA) – an active youth organization in Macau, and it is mainly about traditional culture preservation and the promotion of the cultural heritage, through a series of workshops and participation in the Feast and Parade. Thus, it provides a very good opportunity for our volunteers to join the festival as a cultural event, to get familiar with the Macau World Heritage, experience the unique “East meets west” culture while working along with the local people.
Na-Tcha is a Taoist child god who keeps away the evils and protects people. The folk belief of Na-Tcha has a long history. Not only in Macau, Na-Tcha Temple also existed in many other places in China. The Feast of Na-Tcha (it is believe that Na-Tcha was born in this day) is on the eighteenth day of the fifth lunar month. In Macau although this day is not a public holiday, but some local people will still celebrate it as a big feast.
In this workcamp, we will arrange some seminars related to the UNESCO World Heritage, heritage tours to “The Historic Centre of Macau”, some workshops for promotion of Feast of Na-Tcha, and all volunteers will be assisting in the “Procession of Prince Na-Tcha the Great”. Through this series of activities, we hope to promote Macau as a UNESCO world heritage city, to deliver the message of heritage protection, and to enhance friendship, understanding and solidarity among international volunteers.
UNESCO World Cultural Heritage – “The Historic Centre of Macau” With a 500 hundred years history, Macau preserves many historical properties. The Historic Centre of Macau, which includes 20+ historic monuments and public squares, was officially listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 15 July 2005. “The Historic Centre of Macau” is a living representation of the city’s historic western settlement, comprising architectural legacies amongst the original urban fabric illustrating the first and most lasting encounter between China and the western world.
